四六级高频词精讲（二）:商志逐词精讲好不好

1.illustrate ［ˈiləstreit］
vt.（用图等）说明

illustrate=illusion（幻想）+straight（直接）=把幻想的东西直接表现出来=（用图）说明。实际上illustrate的词根是拉丁语里的lumin“光”，《天使与魔鬼》中提到的“光照派”就叫Illuminati，电灯的参数流明就是lumen（缩写lm），法语里lumiere一词就是“光”的意思，而电影最初的发明者恰好也叫Lumiere(卢米埃尔兄弟)，所以CCTV6里我们经常看到电影被称作“光影”艺术，而国内越来越多的卢米埃尔影院也都是从发明者的名字音译来的，下次同学们再看到就要把它和光联系起来了哦。illustrate是个逼格非常高的用于替换example的词，to illustrate放在句首的意思和和作用与for example几乎相同，而它的名词形式illustration很多时候可以替换掉example，比如我们也可以说for illustration。最后，illustrator可不是举例者的意思，而是特指“插画家”（用图说明的人）。

2. indispensable ［ˌindiˈspensəbəl］
adj. 必不可少的，必需的

in（不）+dis（除去、拿走）+pens（笔）+able（的）→不可以把笔拿走的→笔对学生们是必不可少的、必须的。indispensable一词主要的战场在写作上，所以需要牢牢记住拼写，试想一下用它替换necessary、need、depend会是多么的酸爽。这里给一个议论文开头常用的句型，大家可以自行去变化和扩充：With the rapid development of economy，the network has become an indispensable part of people's life.随着经济的发展，网络已经成为了人们日常生活中不可或缺的一部分。另外它的反义词dispensable大家也可以记住，意思是“不必须的、不必要的”，可以替换unnecessary。

stuff一词因为能表示“东西”，所以经常能在写作中用到，然而由于它的形近词staff有“人、职员、管理人员”这种常用的意思，所以如何区分记忆二者就成为了同学们学习的重中之重。这里我们着重记staff一词，发音上来看staff=“士大夫”=管理人员，然而到这里还不足以区分两个词。这里的区分方法是，人永远比东西重要，所以staff里带着的是a，比stuff里的u要靠前、重要的多。

4. radical ［ˈrædikəl］
n. 激进分子 adj. 根本的，基本的；激进的

radical一词我们需要从radio开始记忆，radio广为人知的意思是收音机，除此之外它还有X光拍片、无线电的意思。从radio我们可以记住，整个以radi为开头的家族核心意思都和放射性的光有所联系：如radioactive意思就是“放射性的”、radiation是“辐射、放射物”、radius意思是“（辐射）半径”、radiance意思是“光辉、闪耀的光”（Dota里的装备“辉耀”就叫radiance哟！歪果人都管它叫radi）。最后是我们今天介绍的radical，单独拿出来是因为所有亲戚里只有radical主要是用来形容人的，意思是激进的；而radical也有类似fierce的意思，表示“重大的、激烈的、根本性的”，比如radical changes就可以表示“翻天覆地的变化”。

5. board ［bɔːd］
n. 板，牌子；委员会，董事会

board一词的意思我们比较熟知的是甲板，on board这个经典搭配表达的意思就是“上车、上船、入伙”等；而除此之外它还有“董事会”的意思，这里的董事会既可以指作为一个组织的董事会，也可以指董事会的所有成员。讲到board就必须要区分一下board、aboard、broad、abroad这四个词。board我们已经讲过了，它衍生出的aboard是副词和介词，意思是上船。broad做形容词意思是宽广的、宽阔的；而它衍生出的abroad做形容词和副词意思是“国外、海外”，大家可以记成“离开宽阔的地方”，自然就是出国了。具体的记忆方法就是背board的时候永远都带着on，on board不可能是出国的意思，只能是上船啦；同样的记abroad永远都带着go，go abroad也不可能是上船的意思，只能是出国。

6. independent ［ˌindiˈpendənt］
adj. 独立的，自主的；无偏见的；不相关联的

independent=in（不）+depend（依赖、依靠）+ent（的）=独立的、自主的。该词的重点是它的两种名词形式：independence和independency，一般我们只用independence就好，简单来说independency和前者意思很相近，但在学术写作中有一些特殊的地方只能用independency，同学们当这个词不存在就好。另外说到“独立、自主”就再介绍两个相关的词：reunion（团聚、统一）、reunification（统一，更强调动作性），在写到两岸关系的时候想必很多同学都想表达这个意思但又不知道地道的用词，这里可以好好记一下。

7. absorb ［əbˈsɔːb］
vt. 吸收；吸引…的注意，使全神贯注；把…并入，同化

ab（离去）+sorb（吸收）→吸收掉→吸收。absorb一词在写作中经常会用到，最常见的是be absorbed in、absorb oneself in，表示完全投入的意思。类似的表达还有devote oneself into、be immersed in、throw oneself into等。最后要注意的是不要把它和absurd（荒谬的）搞混了，不然阅卷老师就会觉得你的作文太absurd啦。

forecast=fore（提前、前面的）+cast（说）=提前说=预报。fore做前缀的词很多，如foresee（预知、遇见）、foreseer（先知）、foremost（最重要的）。而cast一词大家反而不太熟悉，其实我们看电影最后出来的演员表就叫cast，给动画片配音的人员表也是cast，核心意思是出场、说、投入的意思，比如Itunes里的podcast就是从broadcast演变出来的，是“广播”的意思。实用搭配：weather forecast 天气预报

9. acknowledge［əkˈnɔlidʒ］
vt. 承认；告知收到，确认；对…表示谢忱，报偿

ac+knowledge（知识）→承认、确认。acknowledge一词的意思非常好猜，拼写也并不难，重点在于用法。简·奥斯丁在她的名著《傲慢与偏见》的开篇第一句就用这个词造了个流传千古的名句：It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of good fortune must be in want of a wife.有钱的单身男子一定想娶妻，这是人尽皆知的真理。it is .... acknowledged that这个句型同学们可以用在写作的开篇引出一种主流观点，但尽量不要用universally一词，因为过于绝对和夸张，作为替代可以用widely、generally等词。另外句中的 in possession of 和 be in want of都是非常棒的替换词，可以换掉烂大街又没有逼格的have和want哟！

10. inherit ［inˈherit］
vt. 继承（传统等）

in+her（heir继承人）+it →继承，这个词其实只要记住它的词根heir就变得非常容易李。heir是继承人、子嗣的意思，看过《魔戒》和《权力的游戏》的同学都会经常听到出身显赫的主角在自报家门时会用到这个词。记住inherit之后我们顺便来认识一下inherent和coherent，inherent是形容词，意思是内在的、天生的，子嗣继承的东西自然是内在的、天生的；coherent同样是形容词，意思是一致的、连贯的，同样可以根据前缀co（联合、联接）+herent（继承）来准确的记住意思。
